STUDENTS AS CHANGE MAKERS
Design Thinking in the CREATION of educational projects with value for the community – includes the use of maker space

Relevant for career progression in the general or specific domain for groups 500, 510 and 520 of Basic Education (3rd Cycle) and Secondary Education.

This training course focuses on training teachers to promote Design Thinking in their classes as a methodology to open the school to the community and promote the development of key competencies in students. During the training, teachers will be introduced to several innovative student-centered methodologies, as well as innovative assessment tools.

Teachers will learn to work autonomously with students in developing a project using the Design Thinking methodology in order to motivate them to act as “agents of change” in their community. Teachers and students will choose together the theme to be worked on, they will investigate a problem and while learning about relevant topics in their curriculum, they will imagine possible solutions and, in collaboration with their community, they will create solutions and share them.

*Schools in the locations of S.D.Rana and Alcabideche will be able to use the Change Makers facilities (maker space) and equipment in the design of their solutions.

This training course focuses on building teacher capacity. This training addresses several innovative learning and teaching methodologies, namely Inquiry-Based Learning, Interdisciplinarity, Design Thinking, Open Schooling and Student Assessment. Teachers are introduced to innovative methodologies through practical and interactive activities that promote understanding and experimentation, and are then invited to implement them in their teaching practice.

In this sense, teachers will have access to several resources to support implementation, as well as personalized support from the trainers.

This training course focuses on empowering teachers to innovate assessment practices autonomously, To innovate in education it is also necessary to adapt assessment. When done correctly, assessment becomes an important tool for development. This workshop aims to introduce teachers to innovative assessment tools, namely the use of rubrics, checklists, global assessment with automated reporting, digital tools, etc., and to train teachers to create them. Teachers will be introduced to the ASSESS smartphone app for assessing students.

The workshop also involves an introduction to other topics such as, Diversity and Equity, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), promoting an innovative approach to assessment that embraces diversity inside the classroom thus accommodating the needs of all students.
